About Me

A Patient Singing Teacher

My name is Dean Bassett. I am a singer, a teacher and father. I have a passion for sharing my love of music with others  and look forward to helping you find your inner voice. Whether you want to sing professionally, are a student studying music, you just love singing or just want to feel more confident in yourself, you have come to the right teacher. I have a strong working knowledge of healthy vocal practice and an excellent ability to break down the steps in order to progress. I am also able to explain them in a variety of ways. If I am not speaking in a language the student understands, then I have to try another way that does make sense to the student.

I have a passion for teaching what I know, and supporting the students' vocal health is the primary imperative. The second is supporting the students choice of repertoire.  Seeing students improve their skills and feel good about  improving performance fuels me to teach more. It also makes me a better teacher.

My musical interests are wide and varied ranging from country and western through to musical theatre, classical music and Opera. My passion for theatre developed through performing

 amateur musical theatre productions.

In my professional career as a valued member of the Opera Australia Chorus I regularly perform at the Sydney Opera House and the Melbourne Arts Centre. I have covered and performed a number of roles as a soloist and also know how to blend my voice as part of the 40 full time singers in the Opera Australia Chorus.

Since commencing work with Opera Australia in 2003, I have continued to hone my craft. In doing so, I have a strong working knowledge of healthy vocal technique and an ability to story tell through acting. A large part of my role in the Opera Australia Chorus has been singing in a number of different languages such as Italian, French and German to name a few. Through being coached in foreign languages, I have the knowledge to coach pronunciation in these languages.

Last year, I saw my first singing student through her HSC in which she scored an overall 92% for music, voice making up 50%. I also teach primary school students, senior music students, adults wishing to find their voice and those deciding on whether to follow singing as a profession.

I look forward to working with you to empower you to find your voice.
